Defining an Energy Policy: A Game for Thinking

Defining an Energy Policy: A Game for Thinking

Monday, July 10, 2017
Location : swissnex Lab

How much do you know about electricity generation and climate change? Find out with Università della Svizzera italiana’s game and explore the trade-offs of energy policies and the challenges of decision-making!

This workshop, developed and conducted by the Università della Svizzera italiana’s (Lugano), takes the form of a 10-15 minutes game. It aims at raising the participants’ awareness about the impact of the use of certain energy sources on the environment and on every day life. It also teaches the players that receiving more accurate information about a given problem (here energy production) can impact one’s decisions.

Each participant slips into the shoes of the ruler of an imaginary country, and decide how much electricity to produce with each of the available generation technologies. There are six technologies to choose from, identified by the primary energy source: sun, wind, hydroelectric energy, natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy. The aim of this four-staged game is to demonstrate that comparing one’s decisions to others’ and learning about energy impacts one’s choices about it.

Hunger, discrimination, migration and climate change are some of the global challenges humanity faces today. The United Nations Office at Geneva  (UNOG) and its partners address each of these issues when they issued the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a guideline.

Through an installation of scenes and fairy tale characters taken from the book, “Fairy Tales for a Fairer World,” visitors will be able to discover the issues addressed in the storybook and learn about the SDGs while journeying through the different book scenes. The aim is to not only highlight some of the current global challenges, but to show the importance of the work done to in Geneva to address these issues.

During "Education and Innovation for Sustainable Future", an open special event on July the 18th, several speakers will share their stories of overcoming challenges, growing and initiating projects. Each one of them has contributed to building awareness within their communities and taken steps towards positive change.

Can waste water be transformed into electricity? In this workshop by the University Of Applied Sciences Of Western Switzerland Valais, students will run small-scale experiments to learn the principles behind this innovative way of producing electricity, while discussing potential fields of application.

Microbial fuel cells can be a source of energy by transforming waste water, food waste and other organic material into bio-electricity. The goal of the workshop is to teach the participants about this future energy source during a two-days workshop. In between, the participants will be asked to fulfill homework assignments.

The first part of the workshop is theoretical. It consists in an introduction to microbial fuel cells. In the second part of the workshop, a MFC-Kit for small scale experiments will be handed out and an experiment showing the principal functions of a microbial fuel cell will be ran. The students will then be asked to reproduce these experiments at home if possible.

They are also asked to write a short report for the next workshop that is scheduled around 2 months later. In this personal presentation, they have to discuss their ideas on how to use microbial fuel cells in a personal project which can be of theoretical or practical interest.

Program:              10:00 – 12:00 Theoretical Introduction

                              12:00 – 13:00 Break

                               13:00 – 17:00 Practical Experiments
