Rivella – the company

Pioneer and Rivella founder Dr. Robert Barth invented Rivella red in 1952 and put it into production in Stäfa with his 14-man workforce. Based on valuable milk serum and a secret blend of herb and fruit essences, the unique recipe successfully met the taste of the time. The firm moved to new production and administration premises in Rothrist in 1954. Rivella expanded abroad, launched Passaia and created a new revenue stream through its acquisition in 1983 of the Michel brand of fruit juices. Rivella blue appeared on the Swiss market in 1959 as Europe’s first-ever low-calorie refreshment beverage. Then in 1999 came Rivella green which, like Rivella red before it, was also successful in meeting the taste of the time for light, healthy beverages. Rivella yellow was launched in 2008 as an alternative plant-based soft drink.

Rivella AG today is the largest group of companies producing branded refreshment beverages of Swiss provenance. Employing a staff of 271, the group achieves an annual turnover of CHF 154 million. With product awareness standing at 98 per cent, Rivella ranks amongst Switzerland’s strongest brands. Rivella AG is also the official beverage the Swiss National Ski teams, and the company is headline sponsor of Switzerland’s National Unihockey teams and National A League football clubs.
