If Mountains Had a Home – It would Be Switzerland

A wit once proclaimed that if Switzerland were ironed, it would be quite a large country. Possibly so, but that would mean the British would have never enjoyed such an enduring relationship with our biggest treasures – the mountains.

Sir Arnold Lunn – pioneer of modern alpine skiing - once said: ‘We may fairly claim that we inspired the Swiss not only to climb their own mountains, but also to race down them on ski’. Since 1863 when Thomas Cook escorted the first tour party to Switzerland and British visitors to St. Moritz started the area of winter sports, Switzerland has attracted writers, painters, celebrities and royalty alike.

Today, not only mountains continue to fascinate. The vibrant cities, majestic rivers, unspoilt lakes and probably the best public transport system in the world, are also key attractions for visitors from all over the world. At the London 2012 Olympics Games, Switzerland Tourism joins the coordinated national promotion of Presence Switzerland and Bernese Oberland-Jungfrau , and will showcase the best of Switzerland at the ‘House of Switzerland’ at Glazier Hall.
