Graphic design is one of Switzerland’s top products and nowadays enjoys recognition around the world. The advertising posters devised by Swiss graphic artists, for instance, have made their mark on the history of tourism ever since its early years.
The essence of Swiss-style graphic design is a top-quality job of work, competent handling of the tools of the trade, precision and focussing on fundamentals. Graphic design from Switzerland mirrors both international trends and local particularities. Irony and wit are its faithful companions. The Helvetica typeface is probably the most prominent representative of the Swiss graphic industry.
Swiss graphic design is also present at London 2012. The "Zürich – London Poster Exhibition" organized in conjunction with the Museum of Design Zurich focuses on the famous Swiss tradition of poster design. The exhibition shows twelve posters created especially for the Olympic Games 2012 by six graphic designers from Zürich, and six from London. The only prerequisite the designers had to follow was the slogan of the House of Switzerland "We paint the town red!" dealing with the cities of Zürich and London as dynamic and vibrant living spaces.
